June 2, 2014

Dear Parents,

This is the last entry for the year!  I can't believe it is here and I must say good-bye to these kiddos for the summer.  I am glad that I get one more year with them, at least!

I can not begin to tell you how amazed and proud I am of the 7th graders and their families.  The comments made to me about the graduation reception have been non-stop.  I am really, really proud of all you accomplished on so little.  I admire all the hard work and I hope you know how appreciated you are!

This week…

Monday:  normal day

Tuesday:  Cleaning out of the lockers, cubbies, etc… please have your child bring a few bags to empty all of their stuff into to take home.  They don't need to bring buckets and cleaning supplies, I have that and they can use it.  Rocket launch will hopefully be at 1pm near the softball fields if you would like to join us.

Wednesday:  NO MASS!  Uniforms are still to be worn.  Our school families will meet during mass time to participate in an all school scavenger hunt.  Ms. Polzer and Mrs. Murphy have planned an exciting morning for us.

Thursday:  End of the year trip to Devil's Lake.  We are in need of chaperones.  If you can join us, plan to be at school around 8:30.  You can drive up separately if you would like.  If you plan to take your child home from there we need a written note.

Friday:  Mass is at 10:30 in the church.  I hope you can join us to celebrate one last time as a school.  We really don't have any other set plans at this point, but if things come up, I will email you.

Many blessings,
Kim

Dear Parents,

WOW, only one more week of these lovely updates (after today's)....  I think that is crazy!  I am looking forward to seeing what these great 7th graders will accomplish as 8th graders!

This week:

Tuesday:  Everyone must wear their uniform TUESDAY.  We are taking our all school picture in the morning.  Graduation is a 6pm.  ALL 7th graders are expected to be there for graduation and to help serve during the reception.  It will be a fun night of celebration and fellowship!

Wednesday:  NO uniforms today!  Church is at 8:45 and we hope you can join us.

Thursday:  PIG test...  They've had lots of opportunities to study the past couple weeks, so I anticipate spectacular grades!

Friday:  FIELD DAY!  Check your email for what your child is supposed to wear.  So far looks like no rain in the forecast.  I would highly recommend sun screen and a water bottle for this very fun day!  A huge thanks go out to Jenny Turk and the 5th grade planning crew!!!

Have a great week!
Many blessings,
Kim

Great weekend and all is well!  :)  Short up date for the week...

Monday:  choir/music class rehearsal in the afternoon

Tuesday:  Business Ed presentations; dress rehearsal in the afternoon; Spring Concert at 7pm; 6th grade articles due

Friday and Monday:  Enjoy Memorial Day weekend!  :)

Just a few reminders:

Graduation information...  we've sent home paper copies and sent lots of emails.  PLEASE visit with Beth Rodwell if you have any questions or concerns.  It is very important for the students and their parents to attend.

"THE BIG PIG TEST" is coming!  :)  It is the 29th and students have their study guides and have been given a lot of time to study.  I hope that they have given the effort to be studying, it is a difficult test ONLY if the student hasn't studied.

We are going to Devil's Lake for our end of the year trip.  It will be Thursday, June 5th.  We hope that you will be able to join us.  The more parents the easier it is for the kids to get to go exploring.  The smaller the groups to hike, the better!

Take care!  I hope you all are doing well and that as we wind up the end of the year that you know how much I have enjoyed having your child in homeroom this year!

May 4, 2014

Dear Parents,

It is with a heavy heart that I sit here and write this out tonight.  Friday morning we heard devastating news of the death of Mr. Dave St. John.  The faculty heard only a half hour prior to the meeting with the kids.  It was a very hard day, but God held us all close.  Thankfully, the hunger walk was already scheduled so the kids did get to get some fresh air and some time to spend with one another just enjoying the community.  Mr. Dave's funeral information is as follows:  Monday visitation from 4-7pm, here at St. Dennis and the funeral is Tuesday at 10am.  Mr. Beisser has done a great job keeping us all posted on information and we sure appreciate his leadership right now.  It was decided that if your child wants to attend the funeral, it must be with a parent.  With that said, I am sure the week will be a little rough and if your child needs a break, have them come and talk to me and we can figure something out.

THE PIG DISSECTION is finally here.  We begin tomorrow morning.  The students will get their pig and have enough time to get a general lay of the land.  I have plenty of gloves, so they should all be fine.  They all know that we will take it slow and seriously, but hopefully not too seriously.  :)  I've already started praying for a successful experience for each and everyone of them.  We will be working on this for the next 2 weeks.  If you would like to check it out, science is M, Tues, Thurs from 8:30-9:10 and Wed from 12:40-1:20 (should be interesting right after lunch!).  Feel free to stop in if you would like.

The play tryouts and practice are this week.  Hopefully some students have shown some interest in participating.  If your child is interested, I would encourage them to come to tryouts after school on Monday.

Looks like the rest of the week will be fairly normal.  The play is Friday night and Saturday for a matinee.

Don't forget SCRIP orders by 10 on Tuesday.

Many blessings and give those kiddos some extra squeezes this week!
Kim

April 28, 2014

Dear Parents,

The weeks become more and more crazy as we start to wind down the year.  Can you believe that Thursday is the beginning of May?  Time is flying by!

Tuesday at 10am is the cut off for this week's order of.....  SCRIP!  Please remember this is an excellent opportunity for you and the school to earn some essentially "free" money!

Wednesday is our weekly mass at 8:45.  I hope you can join us.  It seems there are more and more parents in attendance these days.  It is always a privilege to celebrate with you.

Thursday is the annual band concert.  I am unsure of the time and place.  BINGO is also happening upstairs in the Parish Center beginning at 6:30.  Attendance has been slow lately, but ask anyone who has come... we have a great time.  Thursday might just be the day you are a winner!  Please join us and bring the kiddos!

Friday, the entire school is participating in the Hunger Walk.  I am really unsure how it is all happening, but stay tuned to the website for more information.

Next week is the beginning of a new tradition at St. Dennis.  Students are invited to participate in a play.  Practices will be each night after school next week.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Brittney Coleman.

The 7th graders have done a great job so far with the virtual pig dissection.  I have enjoyed listening to the comments and questions that have arisen due to the exposure to this program.  The binders are due on Thursday.  Next week is the beginning of our pig dissection.  If you ever want to stop in and see what we do, feel free.  We will be working on them Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30-9:10 and Wednesdays from 12:40-1:20.

It was nice to see some people out to support Mr. Dave St. John and his fight with aplastic anemia.  There were 42 donors this weekend at the drive they had.  If you are interested in more information, please don't hesitate to talk to Mr. Dave.

Many blessings,
Kim

April 22, 2014

Dear Parents

HE HAS RISEN... HE HAS RISEN INDEED!  I hope each of you had a wonderful Easter celebration!

We start our virtual pig dissection on Tuesday.  Students will work with his/her lab partner to fill in a set of worksheets to help deepen the understanding of dissection on the computer.  They will be answering questions as they go.  This opportunity truly helps the students know what they will experience in the coming weeks.  The virtual part will last a little over a week.  The completed binder will be due on May 1st at the end of class.

We will be cleaning up the neighborhood to celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday afternoon!  We will leave around 2pm and will be back by 3pm.  This is always a fun time for everyone involved.  Please send in a pair of gloves.

Jumprope for Heart is Friday afternoon.  The kids love this time to hang out.  Pray for good weather!

Mr. Dave's Donor Marrow Drive is on Saturday afternoon.  Please stop in and check out the games and fun activities.  There will be food!  They are hoping to raise money to help with medical expenses, get the word out about aplastic anemia and most importantly getting "tested" as a donor.  I did the "test" and it is a simple swipe of the inside of your check, quick and painless!  This runs from 10am-2pm in Fellowship Hall.  Sure hope you are able to stop by to check it all out, his family has worked very hard to organize a fun time for all.

Don't forget your SCRIP order!

We are on the HOME STRETCH!  Please help your child stay focused and up-to-date on assignments.

Many blessings,
Kim

April 7, 2014

Dear Parents,

It is National Volunteer Week!  Thank you to all of those who have stepped up in the millions of ways St. Dennis Church and the School asks of you!  I really appreciate all that each of you do for me and for the school/church!

Those Badgers sure played a great game!  I am sad they lost, but they had such composure, they made me proud to say I live in Madison and rank them right up there with "my boys"!

This week is a bit hectic, so hold on!!!!  Many kids are coming back from short vacations this week and many students are leaving early for spring break.  Please be sure they use their MyHomework app on their Ipad to keep up with what they might be missing.  They can also email teachers to check in, as well.  When interest and responsibility are shown from a student it is amazing the positive response from the teacher!

Monday:  Nothing out of the usual!

Tuesday:  7/8 grade Stations of the Cross in the gym at 9am.  It is an amazing experience if you have the opportunity to join us.  It is done using shadows.  Ms. Polzer has really inspired some great work out of the students participating.  I hope you can join us!

Wednesday:  Mass is at 8:45.  Spring pictures are being taken after church.  If students wish to change into a different outfit for his/her picture they may, but will have to change back into his/her uniform after.  The middle school students will have a communal reconciliation opportunity at 1pm in the church.  We have families at the end of the day.

Thursday: Ordinary day!  :)

Friday:  All school Stations of the Cross led by the 7th graders.  Ms. Pool has had them created a presentation of the stations.  The entire school will join us for this presentation at 8:45 in the church.  You are more than welcome to join us, if you can!

Have a spectacular spring break!  I think this break is long over due and when the students come back it is literally all downhill from there.

The virtual pig dissection begins the day we return from break and the real dissection begins on May 5th.  Please pray these go well.

No SCRIP orders for the next two weeks.  Please contact a SCRIP committee member if you want to purchase on hand cards they may have.

Have a wonderful and blessed Easter!  Many blessings,
Kim

Dear Parents,

YIPPEEE!!!  The Badgers are in the Final Four!  I am so excited for them!  GO BUCKY!

I hope everyone got out and enjoyed the wonderful sun this weekend!  I am sure hoping that we will be able to get out into the garden and do some cleaning up out there.  The weather has been so unpredictable, but I did see some little bitty green "things" poking up through the ground!  :)

This week is the first week of the 4th quarter!  Can you believe it?  Crazy we are heading into the last quarter!  Your kids are almost ready to take on the big job of becoming the leaders of the school.  I am proud to say that they are just about ready to go!  :)

Wednesday is mass.  Please feel free to join us if you can!  It is a pleasure to watch the bigger kids work with those little ones.  They do a great job!

BINGO is Thursday night beginning at 6:30.  I hope to see some people there!  We've had smaller and smaller crowds and it would be fun to see some families there this month!  If you can't make it Thursday, there is BIGNO on the 12th of April as well.

Report cards come home on Friday.  You only need to sign the envelope.  You can keep the report card to post on the refrigerator to celebrate or motivate, either way it is good for kids to remember the importance of their efforts throughout the quarter.

SCRIP orders are due on Tuesday by 10am.  The athletic committee is also selling America's Best cards.

Have a great week and GO BADGERS!!!!  :)

Many blessings,
Kim

March 24, 2014

Dear Parents

I can't believe as I sit here writing this that they are saying there might be snow tomorrow evening!  I am so ready to get outside and get my hands a little dirty in that garden of ours!  Guess I will be waiting a little longer.

This week:

The end of the quarter is Wednesday.  Report cards will come home the following Friday, April 4th.  You can always keep up with your child's grades by logging into mystudentsprogress.com and take a look.  If you are unsure of how to log on, please email me and I will send you more specific directions.

There is nothing else special going on this week.  Lots of projects, etc... will be due sometime this week so that they can be added to 3rd quarter grades.  You may want to visit with your student about that as I am unsure for most classes.

The stock market game the students are playing in business education class is going really well.  The students seem to enjoy working with a mixture of 6th, 7th and 8th graders.  It is fun to watch their interactions and listening to the discussions.  They sure have learned a lot through this game and through this year's experiences in this class.

SCRIP still seems to be an unused opportunity by most.  I would encourage you to try it just once to see how easy it is.

The pig dissection is drawing near!  We will begin with a virtual dissection using the computer program called Froguts.  We are hoping to use the ipads, but are unsure at this time if we may just use the computers.  We will start the virtual pig dissection on April 7th.  I am so excited to see this class work through this annual experience.  The 8th graders are really helpful in "talking up" the experience to help lighten the fears and disgust!  :)

Have a great week and many blessings,
Kim

March 17, 2014

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I hope you feel the "luck of the Irish" today!  :)

Science news articles are due for 7th grade on Tuesday.  Be sure those are turned in on (or before) that day.  There will be no late articles accepted.

Try and order a SCRIP card or two.  Our class has very few families who order SCRIP (or at least orders that go home through the 7th graders) and I would love to see that basically free money help our school and you with your tuition.  Please look into the endless possibilities!  SCRIP link

Mass is Wednesday.  Please feel free to join us!

We are nearly at the end of 3rd quarter.  Please be aware of the new "late" work policy that will be instated for the 4th quarter.  The students will be coming home with a copy for you to read and sign.

Many blessings for this week!

Kim

Many blessings,
Kim

February 24, 2014

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their extra day!  I can't believe the Olympics are over for another 2 years!  I enjoyed watching them each night and catching up on the daily competitions' outcomes.

The Trivia Knight committee is still looking for people to help out in serving food/beer or selling raffle tickets.  Please let me know if you are able to help out with this awesome fundraiser!  Trivia Knight is March 8th.

The MAEFAR projects were turned in on Thursday and I am in the midst of grading the self assessments.  So far, everyone has done a fantastic job!

The 7th grade is in charge of morning prayer this week.  We also have our last week of Ordinary Time at mass this week.  Next week, begins Lent!  Hopefully you have planned to join our church in "Sharpening Our Axe" Lenten experience.  It is the evenings of 9th - 11th of March.  It is bound to be an awesome experience!  I hope to see you there!

We are attending LaFollette's spring musical, Oklahoma (YIPPPEEEE!) next Thursday, March 6th.  Please send the permission slip and $3 (for the bus) in soon.  If you would like to join us, please let me know.  We will leave at 8:15 and return in time for lunch.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Many blessings,
Kim

February 17, 2014

Dear Parents,

It is a short week!  :)  Remember we do not have school on Friday!  I hope you all enjoy the day off. Seems like we've had many of them lately.

The 7th graders are currently working on their MAEFAR science projects.  The drawings I have seen so far are looking great!  I can't wait to see the final product.  All of it is due (including the self-assessment) on Thursday at the end of class.

Mr. Beisser made a change in the dress code of the uniform.  Students may now wear black slacks with their shirts if they would like.  They may not be jeans, sweats, or the leggings that have been worn lately.  They must be slacks or pants.

I hope all is well!  You all are in my thoughts and prayers!
Many blessings,
Kim

February 10, 2014

Dear Parents,

We made it through a cold, but sunny skiing event on Friday.  I am so glad that it appeared that everyone seemed to have a great time.  A big thanks goes out to all the family members who hung out in the lodge and watched our stuff all day!  Only one injury that I am aware of and hopefully it will heal up quickly.

This week we welcome Aleeia Mbaye to our class.  This will make 29 in our class of 7th graders.  Everyone seems very excited to welcome her.  She visited for a brief time on Thursday and starts on Monday.

Valentine's Day plans...  This is what I posted on my kim sciteacher facebook page.

"7th grade parents, we will not be having an official Valentine's Day party in the middle school. That Friday after lunch the 6th, 7th and 8th graders have a study hall. It was decided that they will have the opportunity to exchange valentines and have a treat if they would like. SO, I will provide some type of treat for our class. Please do not send in an additional treats. Also, most valentines end up in the trash or on the floor by the end of the day, so if your child decides not to exchange valentines that is quite alright. If you have questions or concerns, please comment or message me. Thanks! Kim"

The 7th graders start a new individual science project on Monday.  They will be investigating mollusks, arthropods, echinoderms, fish, amphibians and reptiles.  This project will be due on Thursday, February 20th at the end of class.  Ask the kids about their research, students in the past have learned many new pieces of information about animals they never knew before the project.

I hope you all have a great week!

Many blessings!
Kim

Dear Parents,

Whether you watched the football games or Downton Abbey there were lots of exciting things going on this Sunday night!  :)  Should be a great Superbowl with Badgers (and OSU Cowboys) playing on both sides.

This week...

Monday:  no school

We start Catholic Schools Week next Sunday at 9:15 mass.  PLEASE look at your email as it has a schedule of everything happening during this very exciting week!

Report cards come home the week of January 27th.  Please keep your eyes open for them.

We heard from Christian (via email) this week.  He sounds great, but tired.  He is already very excited about seeing some changes and is very hopeful.  Please keep him in thought and prayer!

Many blessings,
Kim

January 13, 2014

Dear Parents

Hello!

There is nothing special going on this week.  Here are some reminders for the week:

Buy SCRIP!  Actually, I think our class, on most weeks, does a pretty good job of ordering.  It is one on the easiest ways to earn money for our school and towards your tuition!  Make sure you've placed your order by Tuesday at 10am.  I would love to hear of 3 new family orders from our class, this week!  (My challenge to you!)

Ski Trip:  PUT IT ON THE CALENDAR!  February 7th is the day!  :)  The kids are getting excited. I will have (try to) the ski packets out by Wednesday, but for sure by Friday.  Be on the look for it! The prices have not changed a bit and home-n-school pays for one of our buses!

Jim Weber has been working with the kids during our Business Education class on Friday mornings.  I hope they have come home and told you all about the check books.  This past week they learned how to use the register (learned many of us don't use them anymore... and that maybe I should do a better job of it), how to write a check and a deposit slip.  They seem to be enjoying their time with him.  He will be with us 2 more weeks.

Catholic Schools Week isn't too far away!  Be on the lookout for all the information about EVERY activity in the next few weeks.  An early thanks to those who are helping to plan the exciting week!

Have a wonderful week!

Many blessings,
Kim

January 6, 2014

Dear Parents,

WOO-HOO!  We've hit 2014 and man is it a cold one!  I hope that you all have enjoyed the last 2 days of extra freedom.  I will admit I am getting a bit stir crazy and am REALLY looking forward to getting back into the routine of school!

Things this week will be a little turned upside down, but we will plow through. :)

Church is still schedule for tomorrow.  Remember to wear your uniform as it is Wednesday! We have families in the afternoon, too.

I also wanted everyone to know that Christian will be going to MAYO (in Rochester) after school on Wednesday.  He will be there until the 31st of January.  Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers!

Many blessings and LOTS of warmth!
Kim
